JGA History
The Junior Golf Association of Broward County, Inc.
was founded in 1968 by Steve and Olga Purdo to provide their children with
a positive and fun filled activity during the summer months. Since the
first event, the JGA has become one of the largest junior golf
organizations in the United States where all the members reside in one
county. Over the years, many adult volunteers dedicated in the promotion
of golf for Juniors have contributed to the success of this program.
Without these dedicated volunteers, this program could not continue.
Each year during the months of June, July and August,
up to 400 Junior boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 18 participate
in this program. We are very fortunate to play on some of the finest golf
courses in Broward County with the cooperation of the Owners, Members and
Golf Pros at these courses. Seven one-day tournaments are scheduled
beginning the 1st Monday after the school year is completed. A three round
JGA Championship follows the one day events. The weekly winner, runner-up
and third place finisher are awarded trophies in each of 12 divisions
where the players compete according to their ability and experience.
Immediately following the final round of the JGA
Championship trophies are presented for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers
along with some very special trophies, such as: THE JULIUS BOROS TROPHY
to a senior boy for excellence in golf, THE CAROL MANN TROPHY to a
senior girl for excellence in golf, trophies to the MOST IMPROVED BOY
and GIRL golfer and a trophy to a boy or girl for CITIZEN &
SPORTSMANSHIP. DIAMOND AWARD scholarships are presented to
GRADUATING SENIORS for Academic Excellence. A JGA HALL OF FAME was
established in 2008.
Juniors in the program learn the rules and etiquette
of golf, good sportsmanship and make lasting friendships. We are proud of
the many Juniors who have attended college on golf scholarships, those who
have gone into the professional ranks and also those golfers who were
helped by the Junior Program. We feel we have one of the outstanding
Junior Golf programs in the United States because of the support provided
by the parents.
